Nash makes local bowls history by MORT BIRCH

STUART Nash is making a name for himself as one of the top young crown green bowlers in the country.

The 21-year-old from Bedworth beat some of the leading players in the sport to win the prestigious Moor Lane Classic in Birmingham.

His 21-14 victory over Karl Fielding from Kings Heath in the final made him the second youngest player to win the competition.

He also made history as the first person from the North Midlands to lift the coveted trophy and is regarded as one of the top young prospects in a sport that is growing in popularity.

Some of the best players in bowls have won the Moor Lane Classic and he is proud to have followed in their footsteps.

But he said: "I want to win as many tournaments as possible and to be recognised as one of the top North Midlands bowler."

He started playing on the Bedworth Bowling Club greens in Smarts Road, Bedworth, when he was just eleven years old.

His father Martin Nash encouraged him: "My dad was a founder member of the bowling club 20 years ago and I enjoyed the game from the start," said Stuart, who lives in Heath Road, Bedworth.

He has played in junior and senior tournaments, including the Dunlop Open, and numerous merit competitions, including the Coventry and District League finals.

Like most crown green bowlers, his ultimate aim is to win the All-England Championships and he has already had a taste of it.

"I qualified for the last 64 and got beaten in the first round, but my main aim is to win it," said Stuart, who works at Toye, Kenning and Spencer, the regalia manufacterers in Newtown Road, Bedworth.

Crown green bowls is mainly confined to the North Midlands and the North of England and is often thought of a sport for the more mature sportsmen and women.

But it is attracting an increasing number of youngsters and the Bedworth bowler has become one of its role models and young ambassadors.

"A lot of youngsters are taking up crown green bowls," said Stuart, who officiates at junior county matches. "It's not just for the older people like everybody thinks."
